40th Birthday

Label: Not On Label

Released: 1980

This is a hodge-podge of tracks from a few of the bootlegs that form. It could have been issued around Frank Zappa's 40th birthday (21-Dec-1980) - a gift he wouldn't have liked. Made in Europe and packaged in a “black jacket with one postcard outside and two inside”.

The vinyl is black, the labels are coloured, with pictures of Zappa's face on each side: the first record has green labels, the second ocher yellow, and the third brown. The black sleeve, which you have to unfold to get to the records, is sealed with a little yellow sticker with the title on it.

200 Motels Live with Zubin Mehta & The LA Philharmonic

  • On some versions the title is rubber stamped on the label in black or dark blue ink. The unstamped label itself is just white with the large numbers “1” and “2”. Other labels have the TMOQ pig as a logo. Two different versions are known: smiling pig head with sunglasses and having “sideways” pig logos.
  • Some covers have stickers in different colors (silver, gold, green, orange, etc.) and different shapes.
  • The original version features a handwritten generic cover with black vinyl and was released in 1972.
  • The first re-issue came pressed on red vinyl, the second and third re-issues had various colored insert covers.
  • A 2006 re-issue appeared having been pressed on both brown and turquoise marbled vinyl containing various colored insert covers with two skulls. Many other variations are known.
  • This bootleg was re-released as disc 1 of the 2LP set “200 Motels Live with Zubin Mehta & The Philharmonic / Hot Rats At The Olympic” and re-issued also as disc 1 of “Provocative Squats”.
